Tragedy ... play area

A THREE-year-old girl died yesterday after becoming entangled in a piece of play equipment at a nursery.

The child is thought to have been using a slide and got trapped when she reached the bottom.
Staff at the £42-a-day York College nursery — which can cater for 58 children aged from six weeks to five years — are understood to have tried desperately to revive her.
Paramedics raced to the nursery after a frantic 999 call at 2.35pm but they were unable to save the little girl.
She was taken to York district hospital, where she was pronounced dead. North Yorkshire Police said they did not believe there were any suspicious circumstances.
A spokesman said: “It appears that the girl has become entangled in a piece of play equipment. The police are carrying out an investigation into the incident to establish exactly what happened.”
The metal slide stands about 5ft high in the middle of the play area. Last night a pushchair, doll, a hula hoop, a tennis racket and bicycles were left lying in the playground — abandoned by children after the tragedy.
A few yards away there was an uncovered sand pit with forgotten buckets and spades.
The day nursery opened in 2007 on the college campus.
It operates from three play rooms and has about 27 members of staff.
