MADONNA called Barack Obama a ‘black Muslim’ in a rousing speech that was intended to rally votes.
The Material Girl later defended her comments, saying she was ‘being ironic’ during a passionate speech in support of the US president. The singer interrupted a gig in Washington DC to deliver her foul-mouthed speech on Monday night.
She told the audience “I’m a little dizzy” before talking about Abraham Lincoln’s fight for freedom and the civil rights fight of Martin Luther King.
Then she said: “Now, it’s so amazing and incredible to think that we have an African-American in the White House we have a black Muslim in the White House it means there is hope in this country, and Obama is fighting for gay rights, so support the man.”
On Tuesday, the 54-year-old issued a statement defending her comments, claiming she was making a point about the mistaken belief of some Americans that Obama is a Muslim.
She said: “I was being ironic on stage. Yes, I know Obama is not a Muslim – though I know that plenty of people in this country think he is. And what if he were?
“The point I was making is that a good man is a good man, no matter who he prays to. I don’t care what religion Obama is – nor should anyone else in America.”
Madonna – who was keeping a low profile in a purple hooded tracksuit as she attended a Yom Kippur service in New York yesterday – has previously shown her political allegiance in a typically racy manner.
At recent concerts she stripped to her bra and revealed the word ‘Obama’ inked across her back.
She also promised to strip naked if the incumbent president wins a second term.
That’s not likely to get him many votes either.
