On Thursday, September 27, 2012, the Actor Guild of Nigeria (AGN) elections were finally conducted.
The presidential elections which took place at the guild’s secretariat was reported to have been disrupted by the faction leader Emeka Ike who allegedly ordered the arrest of the vice chairman of the guild’s Board of Trusties (BOT), Emma Ogugua.
NET gathered that one of the presidential candidates Steve Eboh accompanied Ogugua to the Zone 2 Headquarters but returned late afternoon. The elections were however not stopped.
Last year, there were scuffles among delegates who had come for the elections in Baden Hotel, Benin City, leading to a commotion late into the night that left the process uncompleted.
Contrary to the news that former beauty queen Ibinabo Fiberisima had won the elections, the electoral committee will be officially announcing the winner today.
The rumours emanated from actress Rita Dominic who took to micro-blogging site Twitter to falsely announce Fiberisima as winner while the elections were still going on. ’Ibinabo won! A woman AGN president yayyy @ibiliciousxx Congrats love‘, @RitaUdominic tweeted
The elections had before now, been postponed three times.
Former AGN president Segun Arinze (who resigned in May 2012) was also concerned about yesterday’s electoral process;
‘Please let’s set aside acrimony, eschew bitterness and move AGN forward progressively. Election is not a DO or DIE affair! If you don’t emerge winner try again! But TEAM up with the winner and achieve all set goals including yours! Let’s Join hands to elevate our Noble Guild to the next level.We shouldn’t be the laughing stock for all. We should be the Shining Light for all! Thank you.
