Blaze ... burning cabin where police believed Christopher Dorner has died
A charred body was pulled from the burned cabin with forensic tests expected
to show it is ex-cop Christopher Dorner.
Officials said yesterday a wallet containing Dorner’s driving licence was found in the building.
Police have yet to confirm the remains are those of Dorner, 33, but Los Angeles Police chief Charlie Beck described the events as a “bittersweet night”.
A Sheriff’s deputy was killed in a shootout with Dorner as he barricaded himself in a cabin bringing the total of people killed in his deadly rampage to four.
Fire broke out at the home earlier in the evening and fierce gunfire was heard as officers finally moved in on the fugitive.
Two cops were hit and one later died of his injuries. The shoot-out came after the ex-policeman — on the run for 10 days — broke into a cabin, tied up a couple and stole their car.
They raised the alarm and when Dorner came to a police road block he opened fire and fled.
He is thought to have been hiding in the mountains around Big Bear Lake, around 80 miles east of Los Angeles, after allegedly killing an ex-cop’s daughter and fiancĂ©, as well as a serving LAPD officer.
He waged war on the force because he was angry at being fired in 2009.
Big Bear Lake mayor Jay Obernolte said last night: “He’s pinned down. I don’t think there is any conceivable way he can slip away.”
Dorner — who barricaded himself into the cabin — had posted a rambling manifesto online, saying he was the victim of racism in the force. It pledged “warfare” on LAPD and their families.
Dorner had taken cover in the small building about 2pm local time. At 4:15pm, it caught fire after SWAT officers fired several tear gas canisters into the windows.
The blaze spread rapidly, but deputies did not appear to budge from their positions.
A single gunshot was heard coming from inside the cabin before the cabin was fully engulfed in flames.
SWAT officers stood down and walked away from the building about 45 minutes later, KCAL-TV reported.
Police engaged with Dorner after he reportedly robbed and tied up a couple in a remote cabin 20 miles from the town of Big Bear, California.
