'Thrilled' ... Prince Charles speaks of his joy at becoming a grandfather
Press Association
PRINCE Charles spoke for the first time yesterday about daughter-in-law Kate’s
pregnancy and said: “I’m thrilled — marvellous.”
smiling 64-year-old added: “It’s a very nice thought to become a grandfather in my old age, if I
say so.”
Charles was talking soon after Kate left hospital, where she had been treated for severe
sickness. He even joked about the prank call made to the hospital by Aussie presenters
impersonating him and the Queen.
of a meeting with explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes on the training ship SA Agulhas on the Thames,
quipped to newsmen: “How do you know I’m not a radio station?”
Kate and husband Prince William, both 30, smiled for snappers outside London’s King
Edward VII Hospital.
Kate looked pale as she wrapped up against the cold in a thick coat and scarf. But she
reassured well-wishers when she said: “I’m feeling much better, thank you.”
Clutching a bouquet of yellow roses given to her by one of the hospital staff, both she and Wills
thanked medics for their help during three worrying nights she spent on a drip.
Last night Wills — at her bedside every day — was said to be “making sure Kate was resting”
at cosy Nottingham Cottage in the grounds of Kensington Palace.
There are fears Kate, who is less than 12 weeks pregnant, will suffer further bouts of
hyperemesis gravidarum, which had left her badly dehydrated.
Caitlin Dean, of charity Pregnancy Sickness Support, said: “Hyperemesis gravidarum can be
quite cyclical.
“She will be feeling quite good now because she’s hydrated, but she needs to keep taking
fluids or that cycle can start again.
“She has to keep taking sips of water frequently or any other liquid she can tolerate.
“She will be on medication, anti-sickness tablets, so it’s important she takes them on time.
“One of the key things is she needs rest in bed or on a sofa.
“She will need people to look after her, literally bring food to her — and quickly.
“If she wants toast or an apple it needs to come straight away before another bout of nausea
sets in.”
Royal aides have cancelled her planned appearances at a Royal Albert Hall fundraiser for the
Centrepoint charity and the British Military Tournament at Earl’s Court.
Wills is expected to attend both — and is also likely to go alone to the UK premiere of The
Hobbit in London’s Leicester Square on Wednesday, which had been due to be the couple’s
last official engagement of the year.
The couple had been with Kate’s parents in Bucklebury, Berks, on Monday when she became
ill.
Prince Edward, 48, became the first Royal to comment publicly on Wednesday saying she had
the family’s “deep, deep sympathy”.
She had been visited by sister Pippa, 29, mum Carole, 57, and brother James, 25, the same
day.
If search and rescue helicopter pilot Wills has to return to duty, Pippa and Carole are on
standby to support Kate.
Meanwhile yesterday the DJ who duped the hospital tried to laugh off the cruel stunt. Blonde
shock jock Mel Greig’s had previously apologised for her “half-a***d” impersonation of the
Queen. But as she and Michael Christian went back on air at Sydney commercial station 2Day
FM they carried on poking fun at the hospital.
AUSSIE radio hosts Michael Christian and Mel Greig speak out after outrageous prank went
global
Greig said: “You know what? They were the worst accents ever. And when we made that phone
call, we were sure a hundred people at least before us would have tried the same thing.
“We were expecting to be hung up on. We didn’t even know what to say. We got through to the
room.”
Fellow presenter Christian added: “Mel, the world has gone into meltdown because of two, let’s
be honest, really dodgy accents. Bad, bad, bad.”
Another Willy wooly
WHERE there’s a Will, there’s a woollen.
The prince visited his sick wife every day this week — and each time turned up in a different
jumper.

WILLIAM clearly has a favourite look and he’s sticking to it.
But while fashion is the last thing on his mind at the moment, the dad-to-be is stuck in a right
Royal style rut.
It’s certainly true that in times of stress we reach for our fashion fail-safes.
But with the festive season upon us, we hope Wills breaks free of his style boundaries — and
plumps for a cheery snowman or Father Christmas knit.
Week to forget for pregnant Duchess
IT’S been a tough week for mum-to-be Kate. Here’s how it unfolded...
LAST WEEKEND: She falls ill with symptoms of acute morning sickness while visiting parents
Carole and Michael Middleton in Bucklebury, Berks.
MONDAY: Clarence House reveals the news of her pregnancy to the world as the Duchess of
Cambridge is whisked by car to King Edward VII Hospital in London.
Her condition is diagnosed as hyperemesis gravidarum and she is put on a drip.
TUESDAY: Prince William spends six hours at his wife’s bedside before leaving hospital
smiling.
Mum Carole visits and helicopter pilot Prince Harry sends a get-well-soon message to his
sister-in-law from Afghanistan.
WEDNESDAY: Oz radio hosts Michael Christian and Mel Greig make hoax call to Kate’s ward
pretending to be the Queen and Prince Charles. They trick a nurse into revealing medical
details.
Lawyers said the pair laid themselves open to a charge of treason for impersonating a
monarch.
Kate’s sister Pippa and brother James Middleton visit their sister.
YESTERDAY: Kate leaves hospital with Wills, feeling “much better”.
