Fit for purpose ... Tom Daley has won over bosses
DIVING hunk Tom Daley has joined Team GB Olympics heroes signing up for The X Factor — and could win a permanent job on the show.
The London 2012 Bronze medallist will line up along with Jessica Ennis, Mo Farah and Chris Hoy in Olympics Week.Bosses are predicting 18-year-old Tom’s bubbly personality and toned physique will be a big hit with girl and boy fans.
And they are also considering him for a role as presenter in the live shows.
Tom sees himself acting as Dec to host Dermot O’Leary’s Ant. He also fancies helping wannabes get in shape in the gym — and showing them how to develop the mindset of champions.
A source told The Sun: “All the athletes are keen to be involved. But Tom is keenest by far and he makes a really good match for X Factor’s core audience of teenage girls.
“Tom is great on the telly and he’d really like to get involved in all the live shows in some way. Ideas being kicked about at the moment include making him a roving reporter. He could take the contestants out and about to film or to be their personal trainer. He’s keen to work with Dermot. He reckons he’s the best in the business.”
Tom could pick up a £100,000 fee for working as a presenter. And his high profile could put him in line for other TV work.
X Factor’s Olympics Week, when Team GB stars give advice to wannabes, is expected to come when the popular live finals stage of the series starts.
Contestants will sing Olympics-themed songs like Spandau Ballet’s Gold and Tina Turner’s Simply The Best.
Jess Ennis, 26, has revealed previously that she fancies being on the show. She said: “I’m a massive fan of X Factor. I definitely think it’s a great idea.” Meanwhile, one show hopeful, singer-songwriter Lucy Spraggan, 20, is hoping the show will help her find love.
Lucy, who came out as a lesbian at 14, said: “I can imagine the X Factor does wonders for your love life — and girls do love girls with guitars.”
She is through to the ITV1 show’s boot camp after her performance of her own song Last Night on Saturday was described as “brilliant”.
Lucy admitted she is lucky to be around at all — because she is so accident-prone. She said: “I’ve fallen 40ft off a cherry-picker, been bitten by an adder, fallen off a bike, got a coat hanger in an eye and cracked my head open.”
Saturday’s audition show also featured hopefuls Kye Sones, 29, and James Arthur, 24.
Kye won a standing ovation from the judges with a version of guest judge Rita Ora’s track RIP. James, who once lived rough, was dubbed the new Plan B for his rendition of judge Tulisa’s song Young.
X Factor began to claw back viewers in Saturday’s second show. It had a peak audience of of 10.3million and an average of 8.4million — nearly a million more than the opening show.
But figures still lagged behind previous years. In 2010 peak viewing hit 11.98million. Bosses blamed the poor start on soaring summer temperatures.
£100k pay day
TOM Daley earned more than £1million last year in sponsorship deals. But he is expected to only get up to £10,000 per X Factor episode, up to £100,000 if he works on an entire series.
He is sponsored by Adidas, Nestle and Mini. UK Sport Lottery funds some of his training.
